Reach Out and Read, Hooked on Books Sorting Event

Serve KC volunteers will assist Reach Out and Read with their annual Hooked on Books sorting event. There are upwards of 7,000 books
that need sorting and boxing, so other volunteers may be in attendance.

There are 2 available jobs, one can be done sitting, the other requires
a lot of movement and moving / hauling boxes of books. Volunteers
must be aged 10+, anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Attire: comfortable clothes, appropriate shoes to be moving constantly and hauling boxes of books. We recommend volunteers bring a bottle
of water with them.

Job descriptions:
1) (Sit-down job) Placing stickers on books after they have been
sorted to identify the reading level.

2) (Standing and heavy lifting job) – Sorting books into reading levels (1st-2nd grade, 3rd-4th grade, and placing them in boxes. Will label boxes by level and need to be able to lift and move the boxes when
filled. There will be some carts available to assist in moving the boxes.

The event is at the Reach Out and Read KC office on the KU Med campus, Support Service Building, with ample parking outside the building.
Lunch provided after the sort. Questions: Call Selena at 816-582-7857.

Each year, Reach Out and Read Kansas City (http://www.reachoutandreadkc.org/) provides approximately 76,500 new, culturally and developmentally appropriate books to almost 30,000 low income children, birth to age 5, during well-child visits at our partner clinic sites, building a 15-book library for each child before he or she enters kindergarten.
