Kansas City Senior Citizen Community Christmas Dinner – South KC area

Your host, Susan, will be wearing the candy cane deely bobbers on her head (see pic below), and a bright blue or red sweater to make it easier to find her. Feel free to wear your own holiday hats or headgear, Christmas sweaters, etc.! Meet in the NW corner of the school’s gymnasium promptly at 10 AM Christmas morning for name tags and instructions. If for any reason you are no longer available for this event PLEASE CHANGE YOUR RSVP SO ONE OF THE EAGER VOLUNTEERS ON THE WAITLIST CAN TAKE YOUR PLACE! There is a parking lot on the north side of the school, which you enter off of Meyer Blvd. You can contact me at 913-461-7555 should any questions or changes arise.

Let’s help with the KC Senior Citizen Dinner on Christmas Day! This was a wonderful event last year. Let’s make it happen again! ***Please read entire post for information and how to make your RSVP count…it requires more than just clicking the button!***

We need 15 volunteers from 10 AM-2:30 PM to set up, serve, sit with guests during the meal, and bus the tables. We also need 8 volunteers dedicated to kitchen duty (dishes, cleaning, packing up, etc.) from 12:30-2:30 PM. Kitchen clean-up folks could also come for the morning activities…just be specific in your comments if that’s what you’d like to do! *

IN ADDITION TO CLICKING THE “RSVP” BUTTON, EACH VOLUNTEER NEEDS TO LEAVE A COMMENT BELOW IN WHICH YOU INCLUDE:
1) Your FIRST NAME, as I have learned they are often different from one’s FB name! Include first names of ANY volunteers joining you, as I will create nametags in advance.
2) If you are including children as +1’s, they need to be able to be comfortable with strangers without a lot of supervision, as the adults will be busy, so please use your best judgment. Include children’s FIRST NAMES and AGES in your comment so we’ll have a better idea many folks will be able to carry trays.
3) *Your “job” preference:
     a) setting up/serving/sitting with guests/bussing tables
     b) kitchen clean-up
     c) both
4) Sometimes volunteers are needed to deliver meals to the homebound, so indicate if you’d be willing to do that.
5) If you have musical or singing talent and would be willing to share on that day.

***Note: There may be some down time during this event. Thank you for being patient and flexible!***

Volunteering for this involves delivering hot beverages to the guests, and working with the Kitchen Serving Line when it comes time to deliver trays loaded with meals for the 3-course dinner from the kitchen out to the large dining area, and ongoing busing of empty trays/dishes back to the clean-up area.

EVENT DAY: Sign in with me (Susan Morten) to get your name tag and instructions, and sign out with me before you leave. Quick organization meeting at 10 am. Please be on time.

Serve KC volunteers will assist in a variety of ways, but we’ll start with trimming the tree, decorating the gymnasium, and room set-up with tables, chairs, etc. We may help organize gift bags for the seniors.

After set up, we will help escort guests off the buses and get them settled comfortably at tables. The volunteers bring a beverage of choice to each guest, then sit down and spend time with them as though it were Christmas at home with parents, grandma or grandpa! The seniors are often home-bound or may lack socialization, so the thing they want most is just to talk with someone. The guests will enjoy a delicious holiday meal, and after all of them have been served, the volunteers will be able to join them at the tables to eat “while supplies last.”

If at ANY point after signing up you find that you cannot attend, even if you are just on the waitlist, BE SURE TO CHANGE YOUR RSVP TO “NO” TO GIVE THOSE WHO MAY BE ON THE WAITLIST ENOUGH NOTICE TO TO TAKE YOUR PLACE. And if you are on the waitlist, please watch your email close to the event so you’ll know when you become an “active” volunteer, which could even happen on Christmas Eve! Thank you for being courteous to other volunteers and to the guests at the dinner by following these guidelines!

Wear comfortable shoes, and feel free to wear a festive holiday hat if you have one!  Thank you for all you do!!

Since 1977, a free Senior Citizen Christmas Day Dinner has been provided in multiple locations to serve the community. At the St. Peter’s Elementary School location, Serve KC volunteers will have a wonderful opportunity to brighten the lives of others (and our own) on Christmas Day!
