The mission of Lazarus Ministries is to offer unlimited compassion while providing for the unmet needs of Kansas City’s urban core through their volunteer program. Each weekend the Lazarus Table volunteers serve about 400 meals to Sojourners (the inclusive term we use to refer to individuals we serve). The staff prepares the food and volunteers assist in preparations, serve the lunch, and clean up. There is also a clothing boutique offered for Sojourners to ‘shop’ for items of need.
Serving Lunch: 10 Volunteers needed
Please arrive at 10am to help set-up and prepare the dining room in the basement level. 11:30AM – 1:00PM. Once all of the meals have been served the volunteers will help clean up the dining room and are usually on their way by 1:30PM.
Although Lazarus Ministries invites you to dine and mingle with the guests when there are plenty of volunteers, it is advisable to have a hearty breakfast before arriving since it can sometimes be too busy for volunteers to eat.
The minimum age requirement for this event is 8 and those volunteers aged 8-18 must be accompanied by an adult.
Lazarus Boutique Personal Shopper: 10 Volunteers needed
Lazarus Ministries is also in need of ‘personal shoppers’ in the free clothing Boutique during these same hours. Volunteers will assist people in finding the sizes and items they need. Please arrive at 10am to stock and organize Boutique which opens at 11:30am, closes at 1pm and you’ll be on your way by 1:30pm (Ages 16 and up)
Location:
Currently located inside Grand Avenue Temple at the corner of 9th & Grand in downtown KC. The building, with large columns in front, looks more like an old library or courthouse than it does a church. Sojourners often gather near the front entrance of the building; greet them as you would anyone. Don’t be afraid to acknowledge them or to wish them a “Good Morning,” some may speak to you first. In most cases, they will know you are a volunteer here to help. Upon entering the building take the stairs immediately to your left down to the basement.
Parking:
There is plenty of free available parking near the church on the weekends! You can park in the gated lot adjacent to the church building on the corner of 9th & McGee (entrance on McGee). Parking is also available on 9th Street on the weekends.
Dress/Valuables:
Casual dress. They will have a place next to the kitchen for your coats and purses, although it’s best to leave purses and valuables in your car trunk.
