This summer, Heart of America Shakespeare Festival is trying something new in Southmoreland Park: a play not written by William Shakespeare. The organization has updated its mission to expand the repertoire and showcase works inspired by the English poet and playwright.
That’s the case with this year’s “Shakespeare in Love,” which got its start as a 1998 film that garnered seven Oscars in 1999, including Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. The screenplay, written by Marc Norman and playwright Tom Stoppard, was later adapted for the stage.
Serve KC volunteers will work in groups of at least 2 during the festival. (Job assignments will be made the evening of the play.)
Volunteers are asked to be in the park by 5:30pm, and most jobs end at the end of intermission (around 9:30pm), though some are finished by 8pm when the show begins.

Concerned about the forecast?
The show must go on — and will, unless conditions are unsafe for the company and our audience members. Should the decision be made to delay or cancel a performance because of weather conditions, a notice will be posted on the Festival’s Facebook and Twitter pages and an announcement will be made in the park. This decision is made as close to show time (8:00 p.m.) as possible, so we won’t announce a cancellation during normal business hours. If it’s sprinkling, plan on bringing a rain coat to the park!
You can always find more info about the summer Festival on our website at https://kcshakes.org/performances/festival-facts/ .
Note: If you can’t volunteer on June 29th look for the post on July 3rd.
